I Want It That Way is the fourth episode of the first season of Tokyo Vice. It was released on April 14th along with the fifth episode, Everybody Pays.

Synopsis[edit | edit source]

After Jake makes major progress in his investigation, he and Sato reach an understanding and spend a night on the town together. But nothing is ever simple in Tokyo, and Ishida has a request. Meanwhile, Samantha's past is coming back to haunt her.

Plot Summary[edit | edit source]

The episode opens at a fancy party with numerous guests. Samantha descends the central staircase in awe in what is presumably the club she had previously mentioned about starting up. She talks with Polina, who tells her that she has made quite an impression and is doing quite well on the floor tonight. Samantha applauds her, and joins a few of the guests at the party; they talk about her recent holiday to Hawaii. Shortly after, it is revealed that the scene is a flash-forward and, in the present, Samantha meets with a real estate agent about purchasing the building. After the agent tells her that it is a good price and one that will ensure the property is snapped up quickly, she agrees to purchase.

Meanwhile, Jake is brought to the headquarters of the Chihara-Kai, having been lifted from the baseball court not long before. He meets with Hitoshi Ishida, the current, de-facto leader of the Chihara-Kai. Jake is served tea and the atmosphere is pleasant. Ishida explains that rumours have begun about him conspiring with the Police and many within the Chihara-Kai believe him to be a Police-informant. This is causing tensions within the clan and Ishida believes that if the rumours are not squashed quickly, then he will be murdered by the very family that he leads. Ishida believes that given Jake's closeness with Hiroto Katagiri and the other members of the TMPD, he is best place to find the informer and therefore kill the rumours.

As Sato drives Jake back from the meeting with Ishida, the two talk about the situation. Jake tells Sato that he cannot be seen to be conspiring with the Yakuza, as this will cost him his job and considerably more if he is caught. Sato largely ignores his comment and continues to sing along to the Backstreet Boys. The two debate the meaning of the song, but little more is said about Jake's task to find the informer.

When Jake arrives back at the TMPD, he is approached by Miyamoto, who jokingly thanks him for the dinner the other night. Miyamoto invites him to train at his gym with him, but before Jake is able to accept or deny, he is distracted by the arrival of Katagiri. Jake tells Katagiri about the situation he found himself in and the meeting with Ishida. Katagiri confirms that Ishida will more than likely be killed if the informer is not found. This would allow Tozawa to move in on Chihara-Kai territory given he has already been testing the waters. Katagiri tells Jake that he will investigate who could be the informer but that Jake should continue to work on the loan-shark case he has been building.

Having been tasked to work on the case he has been building, Jake arrives back at the Meicho Shimbun Newspaper, where he brings the case to Emi. At first, Emi is reluctant to believe him and investigate further, but Jake brings up the repeated voicemails left for the victims telling them to kill themselves. Emi remembers a similar case being written about in the paper the previous week and this is enough to sway her to believe Jake's theory that there is something more to the deaths than a simple Yakuza murder.

Samantha talks with another girl at the club, presumably looking to recruit her. She tells her not to tell anyone of the news, however, as this may jeopardise their chances of opening the club under the radar. Tensions rise, however, when Duke arrives and questions Samantha over her plans. Duke tells her that he knows everything that happens in the city, but Samantha denies having any plans to open her own club, simply citing that she makes a huge tax-free income at the club therefore wouldn't want to give this up.

Emi and Jake visit the husband of one of the dead women who borrowed from the loan-sharks. He tells them of the threatening letters they were sent that continued even after his wife's death. He shows them one of the letters which has an address of the company on, and the two decide that they should check it out before the company moves offices once again. At the office, Emi pretends that she has been unsuccessful in obtaining a loan from the main-stream banks and remarks that her husband gambles their pay check every month leaving little money to pay the bills. Emi is successful in getting a preliminary loan and takes the contract back to the Meicho Shimbun Newspaper where she and Jake examine it. They figure out that the contract forces people to sign a life insurance policy and name the loan company as a beneficiary and after hounding them to kill themselves, the company collects on the insurance sum. Moments after this is discovered, Tin Tin and Trendy arrive back at the newspaper with the address and name of the CEO.

Meanwhile, at the police station, Katagiri questions a member of Tozawa's organisation over the allegations that Ishida is leaking information to the police about the Chihara-Kai. Eventually, Katagiri figures out that the rumours must have come from within the Chihara-Kai itself, therefore Tozawa must have flipped one of the members and therefore a mole exists within the group. The man is reluctant to reveal the name of the mole, but when Katagiri releases him, he begins to fear that Tozawa's men will believe he has made a deal and kill him.

Emi and Jake visit the address of the CEO of the loan company, but find that he is unable to communicate and is largely just a figurehead of the company. They leave in dismay, and arrive back at the Meicho Shimbun Newspaper. Jake pleads with Emi not to give up on the story, and she tells him that she agrees there is a story there, but that he must focus on their other stories too whilst building a case.
