Tokyo Vice is an American crime-drama series created by J. T. Rogers. The series is based on the book of the same name by Jake Adelstein, which was published in 2009.

The series premiered on April 7th, 2022 on HBO Max, where it streams exclusively in the United States and territories where the streaming service is available. Shortly after the release of the first three episodes, rights to broadcast the show in the United Kingdom were acquired by the BBC. The series aired exclusively on BBC in the UK, and was later available on Sky.[1]

Synopsis[edit | edit source]

The series is set in the late 1990s and follows the experiences of American journalist Jake Adelstein as he relocates to Tokyo after securing a job as a major Japanese newspaper. Not long after his relocation, he is taken under the mentorship of a veteran detective in the Tokyo PD, and begins to explore the unfoldings of the dark, and dangerous, Japanese Yakuza.

  • The series marks Ansel Elgort's first appearance in a TV show. Primarily, he has appeared in only movies throughout his career, making Tokyo Vice a first for him.
  • The first season was initially slated for a ten-episode season, but COVID meant that production had to shut down early, thus ending the first season at eight episodes.
