Emi Maruyama is a senior journalist at the Meicho Shimbun Newspaper and the direct superior of Jake Adelstein. She has a complex friendship with Jake, both assisting him in his efforts at the newspaper whilst ridiculing him for being foreign.

Unbeknownst to those around her, Emi has a complex life at home with her partner, who seems to have anger issues that get taken out on Emi.
