Based on the 2009 novel of the same name by Jake Adelstein, Tokyo Vice is set in the late 1990s and follows the experiences of American journalist Jake Adelstein as he relocates to Tokyo after securing a job as a major Japanese newspaper. Not long after his relocation, he is taken under the mentorship of a veteran detective in the Tokyo PD, and begins to explore the unfoldings of the dark, and dangerous, Japanese Yakuza.

The series received an initial 8 episode order to stream exclusively on HBO Max in the United States. Ansel Elgort stars as Adelstein and is joined by industry veterans Ken Watanabe, Rachel Keller, and Ella Rumpf among others.

In June 2022, the series was renewed for a second season. The first season is available for streaming on HBO Max and Sky.
